Work with Me

Writing a book isn’t the right path for everyone …

But if it’s right for you, we can make it happen.

I’m Sarah Barbour, a writing coach who helps first-time authors turn their dreams into a book.

For the past six years, I’ve been helping authors tell their stories. I’ve worked with best-selling professional fiction authors and solo-preneurs with a story to tell; I’ve also written and published seven (soon to be eight!) books of my own.

I understand what it takes to make a book happen … and I understand the fears you’ll face along the way. If you’ve been longing to share your story with the world, but somehow it’s just not happening, then I can help.

We’re in this journey together

Sarah Barbour is the best book coach I know! She’s so knowledgeable about all things self-publishing, book creation, and writing, I know I can send her any question and she’ll have an answer. She’s also the secret book weapon of some very successful online entrepreneurs, hint hint, nudge nudge. If you’re thinking about writing a book for your business, you’ve got to give this chick a call.

Manuscript Assessment

For books 35k–75k words in length. For other lengths, please contact me for a custom quote.

A surprising number of authors have written entire manuscripts … and then done nothing with them.

Is it any good? Does it say what I want it to say? Will readers like it? Do I need an editor? What kind? Should I submit it to an agent or self-publish or what?

If you have a manuscript sitting on your laptop gathering virtual dust, let’s polish it off and get it ready for the world.

What it is:

The Manuscript Assessment evaluates your story for strengths and weaknesses, telling you how to improve it and what steps to take next.

How it works:

I’ll send you an intake form asking you about your book, your goals, your audience, and your concerns. You’ll send me your manuscript. After I read it, I’ll submit a written report with feedback on how to improve your writing style and narrative flow, solidify and support your theme, improve characterization (fiction);  I’ll also make suggestions on what kind of editing you should consider and how to publish your book so that it meets your goals as an author.

How long it takes:

Typically 3-4 weeks.

$500 (for a 60-minute consultation in addition, add $97)

Please note: manuscript assessment is not the same as editing. If you are interested in developmental or copy editing services, please contact me for a custom quote.

One-to-One Coaching

How do you feel when people tell you that you should write a book?

Flattered … but secretly terrified.

Overwhelmed (where would you even start?!).

Guilty, because you know you “should” write one, but it just keeps sinking to the bottom of your to-do list.

Or maybe your heart just sinks a little, because it’s something you’re longing to do, but you just can’t seem to make it happen.

The idea of committing 50-80k words to paper in a well-organized and engaging manner can be daunting, to say the least. A lot of people want to write a book, but only a relative few get around to actually making it happen.

You’re going to be one of them.

Consider me your guide through the book-writing jungle. Whether you’re writing fiction or nonfiction, I’ll work closely and personally with you to make sure the writing process goes smoothly and that you produce a high-quality finished book.

What it is: A personalized, one-to-one program designed to give you the personalized support, insight, and accountability you need to get your book written (and written well).

How it works: I’ll send you a questionnaire so that I can learn more about the book you want to write and the issues you’re struggling with. Over the next 3, 6 or 9 months, we’ll meet every two weeks over phone or Skype.  We’ll clarify your ideas, come up with a coherent theme, draft an outline, establish a consistent writing habit, and stay accountable until it’s done. Throughout, you’ll receive unlimited email support and lots and lots of cheerful encouragement.

What it includes:

  • A 60-minute kick-off call to discuss your book and brainstorm ideas
  • Two 30-minute calls per month via phone or Skype
  • Review and feedback on up to 25 pages of your manuscript per month
  • Setting achievable goals, targets, and schedules
  • Development of a consistent writing habit
  • Unlimited email support

  • 3 Months: $900 per month ($2500 if paid in one sum)
  • 6 Months: $800 per month (or $4500 if paid in one sum)
  • 9 Months: $700 per month (or $6000 if paid in one sum)
