Work with Me

Writing a book isn’t the right path for everyone …

But if it’s right for you, we can make it happen.

I’m Sarah Barbour, a writing coach who helps first-time authors turn their dreams into a book.

For the past six years, I’ve been helping authors tell their stories. I’ve worked with best-selling professional fiction authors and solo-preneurs with a story to tell; I’ve also written and published seven (soon to be eight!) books of my own.

I understand what it takes to make a book happen … and I understand the fears you’ll face along the way. If you’ve been longing to share your story with the world, but somehow it’s just not happening, then I can help.

We’re in this journey together

Sarah Barbour is the best book coach I know! She’s so knowledgeable about all things self-publishing, book creation, and writing, I know I can send her any question and she’ll have an answer. She’s also the secret book weapon of some very successful online entrepreneurs, hint hint, nudge nudge. If you’re thinking about writing a book for your business, you’ve got to give this chick a call.

Manuscript Assessment

For books 35k–75k words in length. For other lengths, please contact me for a custom quote.

A surprising number of authors have written entire manuscripts … and then done nothing with them.

Is it any good? Does it say what I want it to say? Will readers like it? Do I need an editor? What kind? Should I submit it to an agent or self-publish or what?

If you have a manuscript sitting on your laptop gathering virtual dust, let’s polish it off and get it ready for the world.

What it is:

The Manuscript Assessment evaluates your story for strengths and weaknesses, telling you how to improve it and what steps to take next.

How it works:

I’ll send you an intake form asking you about your book, your goals, your audience, and your concerns. You’ll send me your manuscript. After I read it, I’ll submit a written report with feedback on how to improve your writing style and narrative flow, solidify and support your theme, improve characterization (fiction);  I’ll also make suggestions on what kind of editing you should consider and how to publish your book so that it meets your goals as an author.

How long it takes:

Typically 3-4 weeks.

Investment:

$500 (for a 60-minute consultation in addition, add $97)

One-to-One Coaching

How do you feel when people tell you that you should write a book?

Flattered … but secretly terrified.

Overwhelmed (where would you even start?!).

Guilty, because you know you “should” write one, but it just keeps sinking to the bottom of your to-do list.

Or maybe your heart just sinks a little, because it’s something you’re longing to do, but you just can’t seem to make it happen.

The idea of committing 50,000-80,000 words to paper in a well-organized and engaging manner can be daunting, to say the least. A lot of people want to write a book, but only a relative few get around to actually making it happen.

YOU are going to be one of them.

Consider me your guide through the book-writing jungle. Whether you’re writing fiction or nonfiction, I’ll work closely and personally with you to make sure the writing process goes smoothly and that you produce a high-quality finished book.

What it is: A personalized, one-to-one program designed to give you the support, insight, and accountability you need to get your book written (and written well).

How it works: I’ll send you a questionnaire so that I can learn more about the book you want to write and the issues you’re struggling with. During our time together, we’ll meet every two weeks over phone or Skype.  We’ll clarify your ideas, come up with a coherent theme, draft an outline, establish a consistent writing habit, and stay accountable until it’s done. Throughout, you’ll receive unlimited email support and lots and lots of cheerful encouragement.

What it includes:

  • A 60-minute kick-off call to discuss your book and brainstorm ideas
  • Two 30-minute calls per month via phone or Skype
  • Review and feedback on up to 50 pages of your manuscript per month
  • Setting achievable goals, targets, and schedules
  • Development of a consistent writing habit
  • Unlimited email support

Investment:

$649 for the first month, $499 for each subsequent month

Editing

Looking for traditional developmental or copy editing?

You’re in the right place.

What it is:

Developmental editing: An in-depth critique of your finished manuscript with the goal of improving the content and structure. I will address issues such as:

  • Is your tone/writing style appropriate for your audience?
  • Do your examples support your theme?
  • Is your information organized in an efficient, engaging manner?

I will also make detailed comments and suggestions at the micro level, correcting sentences and paragraphs to make them clearer and more powerful, noting consistent errors of usage, pointing out redundant or unnecessary content, and pointing out areas that could be improved with more or different information.

Copy editing: Editing your manuscript at the sentence and paragraph level to eliminate grammatical mistakes, factual errors, inconsistencies, and repetitions with the goal of creating an engaging, educational reading experience.

How it works:

Contact me with a description of your project (including length) and the type of editing service you’re looking for, and send me a sample of 1000 words or so.

I’ll return your sample with my editorial suggestions along with my fee for the project. If we think we’d be a good fit, we’ll agree on a time frame and take it from there!

Unless agreed otherwise, all edits will be done in MS Word.

Investment:

$150/10k words for copyediting (one round)

$300/10k words for developmental editing (one round)
